Hiring a car is, in most cases the best way to see the island. Away from the tourist areas there is so much to see and do.

Mahon with it's lively port area and historic town, Es Castell, built during the british occupation and Ciutadella the religious capital should be on everyones list for places to visit.

Bus services can be a bit of a hit and miss affair, not that they aren't reliable, on the contrary they are clean efficient and run to schedule. The problem is the that some resorts are only services by two or three buses a day, and if you want to go from one resort to another you may have to catch three buses.

One from your holiday resort into the nearest town, then one into say Mahon, then a third bus into the resort you want to visit. And as some (most) services stop running in the early evening, getting around by public buses can be a challenge.
